The original vision for this project was to create a compact yet stylish living space suitable for rental purposes. Despite its intended commercial use, the emphasis remained on quality materials and meticulous renovation. The apartment, initially spanning 47 square meters, underwent significant alterations, including the removal of partitions and layers of gypsum board on load-bearing walls, resulting in an additional 3 square meters. The remarkable ceiling height, nearly 4 meters after the partial removal of old beams, sparked the idea of incorporating a second level for a sleeping area and workspace. The introduction of a mezzanine floor added a further 10 square meters of livable space. Preserving the charm of the pre-revolutionary building, the design retained elements such as the exposed brick wall, cast-iron radiators, and the original wooden door leading to the wardrobe. The project also allows for flexible furniture arrangements, enabling the apartment to be divided into two separate rooms, as demonstrated in our video tour.
The primary challenge was to optimize the available space within the compact dimensions of the apartment while ensuring functionality and aesthetic appeal. This involved innovative solutions such as the creation of a mezzanine level to maximize floor area and the integration of multifunctional furniture arrangements. Retaining the historical character of the building while infusing modern comforts required a delicate balance between preservation and renovation.
Inspired by the historical ambiance of the pre-revolutionary era, the design concept aimed to blend traditional elements with contemporary features. The incorporation of ornate plasterwork on the ceilings and walls, along with handcrafted parquet flooring, added a touch of timeless elegance. The functioning fireplace and the inviting balcony with wrought-iron railings contributed to the overall warmth and character of the space. Each detail was carefully curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia while offering modern convenience.
The execution of the project involved a meticulous planning process to optimize spatial layout and functionality. By strategically removing barriers and utilizing vertical space, the apartment was transformed into a versatile living environment. The design allowed for seamless transitions between different areas, ensuring fluidity and cohesion throughout. Special attention was given to preserving architectural elements and integrating them harmoniously with contemporary design features, resulting in a space that pays homage to its historic roots while embracing modern living standards.
