It’s hard to imagine the modern world without thoughtful design and architecture. They shape the spaces we live and work in, blending aesthetics with functionality. High-quality interior design not only enhances buildings but also improves the comfort and functionality of our daily lives. From urban planning to creating a cozy apartment, architecture and design directly influence our mood, productivity, and well-being.
In this article, we’ll explore how great design is brought to life — from the first idea to its realization in real-world projects. Our guide on this journey is Ihor Martin, founder and chief architect of Martins Studio, who shares his experience and vision of design’s role in modern life.
Ihor Martin is a Ukrainian architect and designer who, in 2008, together with his colleague Olha Novikova, founded their own studio in Kyiv. The idea to create an author-driven bureau arose in response to clients' demand for a personalized, high-quality approach to design. This led to the founding of Martin Architects, which later evolved into the more concise name — Martins. One thing has remained constant: the team’s core principle — to work with quality, responsibility, and respect for every space.
The beginning wasn’t easy — the young studio had to build a team and earn a reputation in the market at the same time. Ihor Martin recalls that in the early days, their main support came from satisfied clients who recommended the studio to their friends.
“Our biggest achievement isn’t the awards, but the happy clients,” Ihor admits.
Within just a few years, Martins Studio began receiving its first professional accolades. The team gradually assembled highly qualified architects, interior designers, and engineers capable of bringing even the boldest client ideas to life. Rapid growth allowed the studio to take on projects of various scales — from cozy apartments to public spaces.
More than a decade and a half of experience has shaped Martins Studio’s unique design philosophy, centered on a harmonious balance of beauty and comfort. Every interior or building should be not only visually appealing but also convenient to live in and functional in use. Ihor Martin emphasizes that honesty and quality are the core values of their work. The studio never takes on too many projects at once, ensuring each client gets maximum attention.
Another distinctive feature of Martins is its comprehensive project support — from sketch to commissioning. The team offers a full range of services: concept development, 3D visualization, architectural and interior design, and author supervision during construction. Thanks to this approach, every project is implemented exactly as envisioned — without losing the idea along the way. The studio incorporates modern technologies, keeps up with global trends, and offers innovative solutions to its clients.
It’s also important that Martins is actively involved in social initiatives. Alongside commercial projects, the team creates comfortable spaces for schools and kindergartens and participates in charitable construction programs. All these principles have helped the studio earn the trust of clients and the respect of the professional community.
Over the years, Martins Studio has built a diverse portfolio of projects that have gained recognition both in Ukraine and abroad. One of the studio’s first major successes was Loft is Loft — a duplex loft in Kyiv, completed in 2015. This stylish, youth-oriented residence in a newly constructed building was designed as a single open space with a double-height living room. The designers boldly combined the authentic texture of exposed brickwork with modern elements such as metal spiral staircases, glass columns, and vibrant stained-glass windows.
The highlight of the interior is the custom-designed furniture: this project marked the debut of pieces created by Ihor Martyn for the Ukrainian brand HIS (Home Ideas Supply). The apartment is also equipped with a smart home system, allowing the owner to control lighting and appliances via smartphone. This project demonstrates how to create an ultra-modern space while preserving the authenticity of materials and maintaining a highly open layout.
Another landmark case of the studio is Air Village, located in the suburbs of Kyiv. This unique residential complex is inspired by freedom, open space, and nature — created for those who value peace, light, and an open horizon.
The project features contemporary private houses with extensive panoramic glazing that blurs the line between interior and landscape. The interiors are filled with natural light, while open floor plans create a sense of spaciousness, lightness, and harmony with the surrounding environment.
The design is based on the idea of integrating architecture into one’s lifestyle — minimalist forms, transparency, natural textures, and carefully chosen accents create an atmosphere of calm and comfort. It’s an example of how modern housing can be functional, aesthetic, and soulful at the same time.
Our team of architects and interior designers at Martins Studio brought to life the Air Village project — a bold concept that merges home and hobby, demonstrating how architecture can embrace even the most specific interests of future residents. Completed in 2022, this project became a point of pride for Martins Studio and gained attention from industry publications.
An equally exciting challenge for Ihor Martin was entering the international scene. Recently, Martins Studio joined the development of the Virgin Beach Hotel resort on the island of Bali (Indonesia). Working on this exotic project required considering several important factors. First of all, the limited size of the coastal plot — it was necessary to compactly accommodate all functions while ensuring that every room had a maximum view of the ocean, the studio’s founder explains.
"Our main goal is to create a dream hotel on a small coastal plot so that most of the rooms have an ocean view."
Secondly, the local context: the region where the complex is being built is very conservative, so it was important to integrate modern architecture delicately into the traditional Balinese environment. The team found a solution by combining materials and forms typical for Bali (such as wave-shaped roofs and natural wood finishes) with a contemporary minimalist style.
Finally, the Martins Studio project Bali Virgin Beach has received a unique element that impresses guests at first sight: a real waterfall has been installed inside the hotel building. This central water installation has become a symbol of harmony between architecture and nature—visitors are immersed in the atmosphere of a tropical oasis the moment they step inside.
The Virgin Beach Hotel is still under development, yet it has already received positive feedback as an example of an innovative approach to resort architecture.
The project was presented on March 6, 2025, at an investment forum in Kyiv, which brought together leading representatives from the development, architectural, and investment sectors from various countries. The event served as a platform for discussing new directions in tourism real estate development, international partnerships, and attracting investments into projects with high architectural and social potential.
It was at this forum that the Bali Virgin Beach project was presented as an example of successful synergy between the Ukrainian school of architecture and international developers. It received high praise for its strong concept, attention to the local context, and modern design solutions. The project presentation became one of the forum's highlights, showcasing the ability of Ukrainian studios to deliver complex, world-class projects.
In recent years, Martins Studio has confidently stepped onto the international stage.
“We are growing not only in Ukraine, but worldwide,” says Ihor Martin.
Today, the team is working on projects in the Middle East and Asia — specifically in Dubai, Qatar, and Bali. Each new project is not just a challenge but an important step in professional growth. Working abroad requires taking many nuances into account: building regulations, climate, cultural context, logistics. The experience gained in Ukraine has become a solid foundation for new international ventures.
The studio’s first steps with foreign partners helped the team better understand local specifics and avoid common mistakes. For instance, in Bali, the team collaborated with local craftsmen, studied the tropical climate, selected sustainable materials, and adapted their style to the local aesthetic. This kind of knowledge exchange enriches the studio. The insights gained are already influencing projects in Ukraine.
Today, Martins Studio offers bold, contemporary solutions while preserving Ukrainian warmth and a deep respect for detail. The geography is expanding, but the core principle remains unchanged: design must serve people — it should be simple, functional, and unique.
The journey that Ihor Martin has taken with his team is a true example of how dreams and persistence can transform into spaces that change people's lives. From student sketches to international projects, Martins Studio has grown steadily while staying true to its values.
Today, Ihor not only leads the studio but also shares his experience. He mentors the charitable project of the Hutir rehabilitation center for veterans and supports initiatives focused on housing reconstruction. This broad vision is no coincidence — the founder of Martins genuinely believes in the power of design.
“We believe that every space should improve lives and be as unique as the person living in it,” says Ihor Martin.
In the future, the studio plans to explore new forms and materials, pushing boundaries — both geographically and creatively. But the main goal remains the same: to create spaces where people feel comfortable and at ease. Because true design is more than just beauty. It’s a way to make life convenient, meaningful, and harmonious.
